Lip Stains: e.l.f Essential Lip Stains Review

I like the idea of a lip stain because you get a nice, new lip color without the color-transfer on everything your lips get in contact with. So the idea of these e.l.f Essential Lip Stains being only $2.00 a piece, if it works great then I have found a score of a lifetime. However, these are the perfect example of the saying, "You get what you pay for."
According to +e.l.f. Cosmetics, these "lip stains provide a beautiful precise color to the lips with rich pigments where the stain will lasts for hours. The pen-like tip allows you to draw on the color easily for a streak and smudge free professional look. It is also infused with nourishing Vitamin E to hydrate and moisturize the lips."

The marker tip does give a nice and precise application, but it is also pretty rough on the skin. Even though it is claimed to be nourished with Vitamin E, it is actually quite drying to the lips. You definitely would want to have a lip balm handy to use after applying this product.

Formula-wise the stain power is actually pretty good. The stain lasts roughly 4 hours before the need of reapplication, but don't forget the lip balm. The colors, as you can see by the swatches, are pretty but quite sheer (Pink Petal actually does not show up on my lips). These stains will only provide you with a slight tint of color that can be built, but building up the color can be tedious and painful because the marker tip is so rough. I tried to show swatches with my lips, but my lips were actually damaged from trying to build up Crimson Crush, and they hurt so bad that I couldn't do the rest of the lip stains.

Even though these are only $2.00 each, I would not recommend these lip stains. One, because they dry out so quickly, and two, because they are so rough and drying to the lips.
